Rebekah and Bridgett my good friends from All Thingz Related, spotted one of my oven keys in the background of my Welsh Love Spoon Tutorial yesterday. You just can't get anything past those two! After they emailed be about it, I thought it might make a good post. So here we go, on my first Tutorial Tuesday!
If you have never used an oven pull before, they are pretty nice to have around. It beats searching for oven mittens and potholders. My hands are generally wayyy too big for oven mittens anyway.
I looked around at different oven pull designs before making one, and most of them were little more than a stick with a hook in the end. I wanted something that would look good on the kitchen counter, that I could keep at arms reach. So, I decided to design my own. I drew up a few designs, and ended up with one based on a victorian key. This one I made out of 3/4" solid maple. It is about 11" long.
First, I drew out the design on graph paper.
Then transferred the design to my wood.
Then cut out the design with a scroll saw.
Sanded it until it was smooth as a baby's bottom.
And then applied pure food safe mineral oil as a finish.
Quick, easy, cheap, and painless.
Here is another original design of mine using a fleur di lis for inspiration. This one is out of solid walnut.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with a scroll saw, they are about as safe and fun a power tool as a person can own. I have several examples of scroll saws in my online store. Just click here if you would like to see one.
I hope you enjoyed this short little tutorial. Please feel free to comment or ask questions.

I love them both but the Victorian Key is my favorite! This is such a clever idea and I love it! It reminds me so much of the work you'd see at one of the artisan shops Tennessee (one of my favorite places to visit). It's just great! I'm so glad you shared this at our Anything Related party!

I Rory, I am glad you found my blog! I am now following you as well, and look forward to perhaps learning a thing or two or three! Have a great day!
I've always used a big spoon, but these keys are much more fun to look at. They probably work better, too!
What a fabulous idea - I especially love the fleur! I am always the one burning myself or something else in the process. Thanks for linking up to Be Inspired today.

Hello Diedouchka,
Thank you for commenting about my oven rack pull. It is used for pulling out a hot oven rack. The larger end is used as a handle. The smaller end hooks onto the oven rack. You can also use the oven key to push the rack back in. It helps to keep the cook from burning her hands. I apologize for not having explianed the use of it better in my post. Rory
What a fabulous idea. I think these would make fabulous wall art too! Great craftsmanship! Well done. ~ Thanks for linking to the Sunday Showcase. ~ Stephanie Lynn
