Handmade Oven Rack Pulls - Tutorial Tuesday

Rebekah and Bridgett my good friends from All Thingz Related, spotted one of my oven keys in the background of my Welsh Love Spoon Tutorial yesterday. You just can't get anything past those two! After they emailed be about it, I thought it might make a good post. So here we go, on my first Tutorial Tuesday!

If you have never used an oven pull before, they are pretty nice to have around. It beats searching for oven mittens and potholders. My hands are generally wayyy too big for oven mittens anyway.

I looked around at different oven pull designs before making one, and most of them were little more than a stick with a hook in the end. I wanted something that would look good on the kitchen counter, that I could keep at arms reach. So, I decided to design my own. I drew up a few designs, and ended up with one based on a victorian key. This one I made out of 3/4" solid maple. It is about 11" long.

First, I drew out the design on graph paper.

Then transferred the design to my wood.

Then cut out the design with a scroll saw.

Sanded it until it was smooth as a baby's bottom.

And then applied pure food safe mineral oil as a finish.

Quick, easy, cheap, and painless.

Here is another original design of mine using a fleur di lis for inspiration. This one is out of solid walnut.
